The Ministry of Tourism is proactive to promote ecotourism and sustainable tourism across India, with an aim to balance economic growth with the preservation of the environment. In the latest effort, the Ministry has prepared National Strategies for Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism, which are in keeping with global trends and environmental priorities.

One of the flagship initiatives is the Travel for LiFE program, one that brings tourists and stakeholders in the tourism industry together to foster sustainable travel. This reflects the rising global consciousness about climate change and the necessity for an environmentally friendly form of travel. Statista has reported that the global ecotourism market, which is valued at $172.4 billion in 2022, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.9%. The market is expected to reach $374.2 billion by 2028.

Such importance that sustainable travel assumes has been indicated by facts that 83% of international travelers, as of February 2024, think the practice is essential. As such, it poses one of the greatest opportunities India could tap as it seeks to take leadership in ecotourism destinations in the world.

Although tourism falls largely in the domain of State Governments, the Ministry of Tourism actively supports infrastructure development through financial assistance to States, Union Territories, and Central Agencies under various schemes. Swadesh Darshan Scheme was a key initiative related to the Eco Circuit for promotion of tourism in eco-sensitive regions.

To further strengthen its efforts, the Ministry has revamped the scheme with the launch of Swadesh Darshan 2.0, which brings in a more integrated framework for developing tourism destinations. This version focuses on sustainable and responsible tourism through partnerships with States, Union Territories, and local authorities. One of the most important components of the scheme is the Challenge-Based Destination Development, which transforms tourism destinations into sustainable hubs while enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, emphasized the importance of these initiatives in a written response in the Lok Sabha. Highlighting the growing relevance of ecotourism in combating climate change, he reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to environmental conservation while promoting India as a global tourism hotspot.

With these forward-thinking strategies, the Indian government is building a path for a sustainable tourism industry that will flourish based on international sustainability targets: economic growth and environmental responsibility for generations.
